The four songs on the space-themed Dust to Darkness from Umami Daddy explore the phases of a star’s life, beginning to end. Although the EP can be broadly assigned to the melodic-techno genre, each track has a unique vibe embodying the feeling of specific stage. The deeply melodic and downtempo Cygnus Ring uses emotive polyrhythmic synths and shimmering drums to capture the excitement and uncertainty of early star formation. Antares embodies the supermassive red-giant stage with confident swirling synths, catchy breakbeats, and deep groovy bass. The explosive supernova stage is expressed in Ex Astris with hypnotic synth melodies on a foundation of dance-inducing driving techno. The final track Black Sun captures the mysterious black-hole phase with more experimental, echoey drums and a beautifully arpeggiated melody.
